Ceramic coating: what it does and what it does not

A coating makes paint slicker, glossier and easier to clean. It does not make it scratch-proof.

A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a thin, hard layer bonded to the clear coat. It is slicker than wax, so dirt releases easily and water beads and sheets off. It resists UV fading and chemical stains better than wax and lasts years rather than weeks.

What it does not do is make paint scratch-proof. Stone chips and key scratches go straight through. Careless washing will still mark it, though less easily.

A coating also locks in whatever is underneath, which is why the paint is corrected before it goes on.
